When assessments uncover weaknesses in gifted children, the child’s shortcomings may be aided by counseling or coaching. For those parents who already know their gifted child has a need for counseling, they would want to find a therapist or coach who is also an expert in gifted services. I am well trained and experienced in both areas. I have counseled gifted children, teens, and their parents for over 40 years with the following concerns:
- Emotional and social issues such as anxiety, depression, and friendships
- Peer relationships including siblings and intellectual peers, bullying and rejection
- Self esteem and self confidence, particularly when feeling different
- Parenting issues in managing behavior using positive strategies
- Motivation for the child to reach their potential and achieve up to their ability level
- Getting the child ready to take on challenging tasks, rigorous curriculum, homework assignments, and/or creative endeavors
- Guiding the child to consistently act independently
- Advocating to meet the child’s educational and learning needs
- Learning about useful school programs, contacts, acceleration options, and gifted resources
- Teaching executive functioning skills (time management, routine, organization, planning ahead, completing assignments, self regulation of behavior, etc.) to twice-exceptional gifted children with ADHD, Asperger’s, learning disabilities, or other disorders
- Helping the parent and the child cope with twice-exceptionality
- Coping with frustration when school excludes or limits your gifted child’s access to needed services
- Coping with other peoples’ negative opinions about giftedness
- Adjusting to the child’s different learning styles, specific learning differences, or a “poor educational fit”
As a counselor, therapist, or coach, I will listen carefully to understand you and be empathetic toward your concerns. I want to know what is important in your life and to provide support and encouragement as well as useful recommendations. Your time will be well spent with me.
